New SVG.org Setup

For those of you who were in Tokyo for SVG.Open 2004 (more on the conference soon in another entry), the new svg.org website is supposed to answer one of the gripes I expressed during my Learning from Flash and its Community
session there. Here are some things you might want to know about the site.
First things first: it's not quite ready. It's ready enough to be online, but not ready enough to be truly advertized yet. This site runs Scoop and it didn't take more than 30 minutes to get all the basics functional. Scoop is a Slash-like publishing system, which was exactly what I wanted for this website. I wanted SVG.org to allow for the community to get together and share information and thoughts informally. Basically, the two main things are centralizing important SVG news, and everyone can submit stories, which will need to be approved by editors. Once registered, users, must like myself right now, can write into their diary. Diaries are a little like a weblog, an easy way to post your SVG-related (or unrelated) thoughts.
While Scoop offers some nice functionality, it has a few things I haven't managed to customize to my liking yet. Most noticeably, the HTML output is of poor quality right now, but I'm working on it. Scoop offers to custmoize most bits through a convenient web interface, but some bits are still burried into the application internals and it'll take me a while to get there. Eventually, this site will be in full compliance to XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1.
You'll also notice that a few things aren't working yet (maybe they will by the time you read this). For instance, the wiki hasn't been migrated to the new server yet, but that should happen soon. In the Useful Links
box, you'll notice that neither the Our Mission
or FAQ
pages are working. This is coming soon too. Most of the rest of the site should be working, even though design may be a little patchy (such as comments or poll results).
I think the site functionality is pretty good for an initial release. I sincerely hope it will get better, and you can make all the difference by submitting stories, writing in your diaries, commenting on news and users' stories, etc. SVG.org for now is just an empty shell, it's the community's job to fill it with interesting resources and information.
