Dave Hyatt, an Apple engineer working on WebKit, the Web page rendering component used in Apple's Safari browser and Nokia's S60 browser, has posted on the WebKit weblog some thoughts on how the WebKit team wants to utilize SVG in order to offer rendering capabilities for Web pages to look sharp on low- and high-DPI screens alike. One of the goals of their SVG implementation that he outlines is that SVG images in WebKit should be made a first-class image format, so that it can be used anywhere you might use a PNG, a GIF or a JPG
. Thus, SVG images could be displayed as background images, the XHTML <img> element, etc. As always, you can grab the latest nightly build of WebKit to test drive their latest SVG enhancements.
