Editing an SVG image inside the SVG WG charter page.

The W3C's Web editor has just been released! In addition to bug fixes, improvements of the UI and support of RDFa & XTiger editing, this new version comes with an SVG editor. A large number of "classical" editing commands are now available. Here is an overview of the current features:

  • management of title and description.
  • insertion of image, text and foreignObject.
  • basic shapes: square, diamond, triangle, circle...
  • lines, polygons, polylines and paths.
  • simple style: color, stroke width and opacity.
  • layers management: group, levels, alignment...
  • transformations: rotation, translation, scaling...
  • SVG templates: regular polygons, 3D shapes, arrows...

Amaya is distributed under the W3C software license and translated in about fifteen languages. You can download the binary release or build Amaya from the sources.

Some specific features of the SVG editor:

  • The SVG editor is really integrated in the authoring environment. This means that you can edit an SVG image directly in your XHTML document. It is also possible to insert mathematical formulae inside an SVG image (useful for scientific diagrams).
  • Once you have given a title to each important component of an SVG image, you can generate a spatial description. This is to encourage and help users to produce accessible contents.
  • A shape recognition algorithm allows Amaya to handle basic shapes that do not exist in the SVG language, without using any extension of the language.
  • A matrix decomposition algorithm allows to write any transformation as a product of at most three simple SVG transformations. Moreover in the case of a similitude, only translate, rotate and scale are used. This is useful for people who edit the transform attribute, since the decomposition is easier to understand than "matrix(a, b, c, d, e, f)".
